Install WordPress on your hosting
How to install WordPress on a FoxFolio Cloud WordPress Cloud or Cloud Hosting service, and what Managed WordPress customers receive instead.
Quick answer
WordPress is not preinstalled on new FoxFolio Cloud services. On WordPress Cloud, open the hosting control panel from your account and run the WordPress installer for your domain; on Cloud Hosting, use the one-click application installer. Managed WordPress includes one reviewed installation or migration done by FoxFolio Cloud, so Managed WordPress customers do not need to install it themselves.
Before you start
- An Active WordPress Cloud or Cloud Hosting service
- Access to your FoxFolio Cloud account at
account.foxfolio.cloud - An email address you can use for the WordPress administrator account
- If the site already exists somewhere else, read Move an existing WordPress site instead of installing a blank site
Applies to: WordPress Cloud, Cloud Hosting, Managed WordPress.
Which plan installs WordPress how
On WordPress Cloud, WordPress lives in the main website folder (public_html) and the plan uses one database. If you need a different application, such as a shop system that is not WordPress, Cloud Hosting is the better fit. See Choose a hosting plan.
| Plan | How WordPress gets installed | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress Cloud | The WordPress installer in the control panel, on a platform tuned for WordPress | You |
| Cloud Hosting | The one-click application installer, which also offers other applications | You |
| Managed WordPress | One reviewed installation or migration is included | FoxFolio Cloud |
Steps
Open the control panel for the right service
Sign in at account.foxfolio.cloud (opens in a new tab), open Services → My Services, choose the service and select Log in to Control Panel. See Open your hosting control panel.
Start the installer
On WordPress Cloud, open the WordPress installer shown on the service overview. On Cloud Hosting, open the one-click installer and choose WordPress from the list of applications.
Choose where the site goes
Install into the main domain’s root folder unless you have a reason not to. A site installed into a sub-folder appears at an address such as
example.com/blog.Create the administrator account
Enter a site title, an administrator username that is not “admin”, a long unique password and your email address. Store the password in a password manager.
- Use an email address you check. WordPress sends password resets and update notices there.
Finish and sign in
Complete the installer and wait for it to confirm. Then open your site’s
/wp-admin/address, or use the WordPress dashboard link in the control panel, and sign in with the account you just created.Turn on HTTPS
Check that the free SSL certificate is active so the site loads over
https://. See Turn on the free SSL certificate.
What you should see
Your domain shows the default WordPress theme, and you can sign in to the WordPress dashboard. The control panel’s WordPress tools now list the installation, its version, plugins and themes.
Troubleshooting and common mistakes
- The installer says files already exist in the folder.
- The folder holds a placeholder page or an earlier attempt. Take a backup first, then remove only files you recognise as not needed, or install into an empty folder. If you are unsure, ask support before deleting anything.
- Your domain does not show the new site.
- The domain may not point to FoxFolio Cloud yet. Check Point a domain you own to FoxFolio Cloud and allow time for DNS changes.
- The browser shows “Not secure”.
- The SSL certificate is not active yet, or WordPress still uses an
http://address. See Force HTTPS and fix “Not secure” warnings. - You forgot the administrator password straight away.
- Use Lost your password? on the WordPress sign-in page, or reset it from the WordPress tools in the control panel.
When to contact FoxFolio support
Open a ticket if the installer fails with an error, if you cannot find an installer on your service, or if you are a Managed WordPress customer and your included installation has not been arranged. Give the service domain and the exact error. Do not send the WordPress password.
Common questions
Is WordPress already installed when I buy WordPress Cloud?
No. New WordPress Cloud services start empty so you can choose between a fresh installation and a migration of an existing site.
Can I install more than one WordPress site on one plan?
Each hosting service is for one website. A separate website needs its own hosting service. See Add another website.
