Set up email in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird or a phone
The IMAP, POP3 and SMTP server names, ports and security settings for FoxFolio Cloud mailboxes, with steps for common mail apps.
Quick answer
Add the account in your mail app with your full email address as the username and your mailbox password. Use IMAP server imap.stackmail.com on port 993 with SSL/TLS, and SMTP server smtp.stackmail.com on port 465 with SSL/TLS (or 587 with STARTTLS), with authentication switched on for outgoing mail. IMAP is recommended so every device sees the same messages.
Before you start
- An existing mailbox and its password
- The mail app you want to use: Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or the mail app on iPhone or Android
Applies to: Basic Email, Premium Mailbox, Cloud Hosting, WordPress Cloud, Managed WordPress.
Server settings
Hostnames on your own domain, such as mail.yourdomain.ca, can also work once the free SSL certificate is active on the service. If your app warns about a certificate, use the stackmail.com names above.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Username | Your full email address |
| Incoming (IMAP, recommended) | imap.stackmail.com, port 993, SSL/TLS |
| Incoming (POP3) | pop3.stackmail.com, port 995, SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing (SMTP) | smtp.stackmail.com, port 465 with SSL/TLS, or port 587 with STARTTLS |
| Outgoing authentication | On, using the same username and password |
Steps
Choose IMAP
Pick IMAP unless you have a reason not to. IMAP keeps mail on the server, so your phone, laptop and webmail stay in step. POP3 downloads mail to one device.
Add the account
In your app, choose to add an account and pick the manual or “other” option if it offers one, then enter your name, full email address and mailbox password.
- Outlook: File → Add Account → Advanced options → set up manually → IMAP.
- Apple Mail and iPhone: Add Account → Other → Add Mail Account.
- Thunderbird: Account Settings → Add Mail Account → Configure manually.
Enter the incoming server
Use
imap.stackmail.com, port 993, SSL/TLS, and your full email address as the username.Enter the outgoing server
Use
smtp.stackmail.com, port 465 with SSL/TLS or 587 with STARTTLS, and switch on authentication with the same username and password.Test both directions
Send a message to another address you own, and reply to it. Both messages should appear in your app and in webmail.
What you should see
Your app sends and receives mail over encrypted connections, and the same folders appear on every device you connect with IMAP.
Troubleshooting and common mistakes
- The app says the password is wrong.
- Use the full email address as the username. If you are unsure of the password, set a new one in Email Accounts in the control panel.
- Receiving works but sending fails.
- Outgoing authentication is off, or the port and security type do not match. Use 465 with SSL/TLS or 587 with STARTTLS.
- Outlook falls back to port 143 or no encryption.
- Cancel and enter the settings manually. Do not use unencrypted connections.
- A new mailbox cannot send many messages.
- New mailboxes have a lower daily sending limit for their first week. See Fix email that is not sending or receiving.
When to contact FoxFolio support
Open a ticket if webmail works but no app can connect with the settings above. Include the app name and version and the exact error text. Do not include the password.
Common questions
Can I use POP3?
Yes, with pop3.stackmail.com on port 995 and SSL/TLS. POP3 usually stores mail on one device only, so IMAP is the better choice for most people.
